GARDEN OF POISONS Series II: Datura (Datura Stramonium)
The third in a new collection of my Poison Garden series - exploring plants with poisonous properties, often with magical uses.

Datura commonly known as 'Jimsonweed', 'Devil's Trumpet', 'Thornappple' or 'Witch's Weed' has a long history of association with magical practices. It's hallucinogenic properties are highly sought after as an ingredient in potions, ointments and other treatments.
Some scholars believe that Delphic oracles in ancient Greece used Datura to induce their legendary visions, whilst the Aztec culture used Datura as both a painkiller in their initiation rituals, as well as for medicinal and divination purposes.
Datura is also utilised as an entheogen by various First American groups, notably the Chumash who regarded it as the source of supernatural power, and formed a unique mythology centered around it.
