ASRAI

Water fairies that dwell in freshwater ponds or lakes, Asrai are said to swim to the surface to bathe in the moonlight once every hundred years. They are believed to be predatory, often luring menfolk (whom they abhor for their vulgar and coarse manner) to a watery grave with the promise of gold and treasure.

"The Asrai wander’d, choosing for their homes

All gentle places- valleys mossy deep,

Star-haunted waters, yellow strips of sand

Kissing the sad edge of the shimmering sea,

And porphyry caverns in the gaunt hill-sides.” - Robert Williams Buchanan
