GARDEN OF POISONS Series II: Cuckoo Pint (Arum Maculatum)
The second in a new collection of my Poison Garden series - exploring plants with poisonous properties, often with magical uses.
The Cuckoo Pint is variously named 'Lords and Ladies', 'Angels and Devils' and 'Adders Meat' in folkloric belief, notable for it's strong link to sexual symbolism and as an aphrodisiac - due to it's suggestive forms.
The juice of the leaves was used during the middle ages as a treatment for warts.
In Irish belief the hooded cowl shaped fork of the spathe was believed to be used as a lamp by fairies.
The roots have been variously used as a thickener in soups and sauces and ground to create a starch, used to stiffen ruffs in Elizabethan England.
