A fungi which grows on rye and other crops, believed to have been used as an element in the Eleusinian Mysteries ritual drink 'Kykeon', and by midwifes to treat gynaecological issues and to aid childbirth.
It was also proposed that it might have played a part in the Salem witch trials due to it's hallucinogenic properties, and it has been theorised that it was also used in prehistoric fertility cults, with traces found in the stomachs of human remains found in peat bogs such as the Tolland Man.
