Not to be confused with the similar looking Colchicum or Autumn Crocus, Crocus Sativa is the proud bearer of saffron, commonly used in cooking and for medicinal purposes such as for rheumatism.

However, when ingested in large amounts saffron can lead to poisoning and even death.

The crocus was important in Ancient Greece where it appeared numerous times in myth, (Crocus was the name of a mortal youth transformed into a saffron flower by the whim of the gods), and Pliny advised wearing saffron around the neck to prevent drunkenness!

In the Ancient world saffron was popularly used as a dye, it is believed that the Minoan Snake goddess had saffron yellow robes. The spice was also associated with Persephone, with crocuses being used as offerings at her shrines.
